PMO vs Scrum Master, what are the differences?

Learn about the differences between PMO and Scrum Master. Both have essential functions in the implementation of projects.
Summary

Project management is vast and complex, with numerous positions that contribute to the success of a company's projects. Two of these roles are often misunderstood or considered to be interchangeable. These are the PMO (Project Management Office) and Scrum Master positions.

Although they share a common objective, namely the success of projects, their approaches, responsibilities and areas of intervention are quite distinct.

PMO

PMO refers to the project management office or the person who runs that office. Its main mission is to formalize project management processes within the company and to ensure that projects are aligned with the strategies and objectives of the organization as a whole.

Although a PMO has many different missions, here are the main ones:

Missions of a PMO

  • Standardization of processes: The PMO establishes project management methodologies, processes, and practices to be followed. These must ensure a consistent approach across the organization.
  • Portfolio management: He oversees the project portfolio, ensuring that each project contributes to the company's overall strategy and optimizes returns on investment.
  • Allocation of resources: The PMO plays a key role in the allocation of resources within the various projects. He must ensure that projects have the right resources at the right time in order to succeed.
  • Follow-up and control: He is responsible for monitoring the performance of projects, identifying deviations from plans and implementing the necessary corrections.

 

Scrum Master

The Scrum Master plays a key role in project management teams. He acts as a “facilitator” and coach for the development team, ensuring that processes are followed and that obstacles that could prevent the team from achieving its goals are removed.

To make a long story short, here are the few key missions of a scrum master.

Missions of a Scrum Master

  • Facilitation: The Scrum Master participates in Scrum meetings (Daily, Sprint Planning, Sprint Planning, Sprint Review, and Sprint Retrospective) to ensure that they are productive and focused on the right topics.
  • Coaching: It helps teams understand and implement agile and Scrum principles, working to continuously improve their process.
  • Removing obstacles: The Scrum Master identifies and removes obstacles that could hinder team progress, allowing for a smoother workflow.
  • Intermediate: He acts as an intermediary between the development team and other stakeholders, communicating the progress of the project and negotiating priorities when necessary.

 

Scrum Master vs PMO

Although the PMO and Scrum Master share the goal of project success, their approaches differ significantly:

Range:

  • The PMO has an organization-wide vision, aimed at standardizing project management practices and aligning projects with strategic goals.
  • The Scrum Master focuses on a specific team or project, with the mission of using the Scrum method to improve project delivery.

Methodology:

  • The PMO can adopt a variety of project management methodologies, including agile methods.
  • The Scrum Master is specifically dedicated to the application of Agile principles.

Role:

  • The PMO often acts as a supervisor and advisor, providing direction and resources across the organization.
  • The Scrum Master, on the other hand, is a coach and facilitator for their team, focusing on removing obstacles and improving processes.

Agile PMO

In an agile environment, the PMO and Scrum Master can collaborate effectively to maximize the value and effectiveness of projects. An agile PMO can adopt and support agile principles across the organization, facilitating an environment where Scrum Masters and their teams can thrive. This collaboration can take place in several ways:

  • Organizational support: The PMO can provide organizational support to Scrum teams, ensuring that company policies and procedures facilitate rather than hinder agile methodologies.
  • Strategic alignment: By working together, the PMO and Scrum Masters can ensure that agile projects are aligned with the company's broader strategic goals, thereby optimizing project outcomes.
  • Sharing best practices: The agile PMO can serve as a center for sharing agility knowledge and best practices, helping Scrum Masters and their teams to continuously improve.
